Description
This installation was part of the exhibition groeipijn (growing pain). The underlying theme of this exhibition was biofeedback. I took the most simple form of biofeedback, the slight movement of the mouse, as a starting point for this work. The default state of the work was an animation of a candle burning. As soon as the mouse was moved the candle faded out to make room for a chaotic animation over a manipulated picture of a landscape. The animation consisted of words appearing in different sizes. The words were pronounced by a text-to-speech program. They were chosen randomly from the heart sutra, a classic and well known (zen) buddhist text. The main thought that is explained in this text is that form is emptiness and emptiness is form. The strange, nonsensical sentences created in this way underline the wisdom expressed in the text. Then objects start falling from the top of the screen completing the world of form and thought. After about 30 seconds the sounds and animations fade out and the serene image of the burning candle awaits another disturbance.
